Word Jones has been creating and enhancing written assets since 1999

We began in Portland, Oregon as a solo operation, and now we have a team of experienced pros throughout the Northwest who offer copywriting, editing and proofreading for a broad array of clients, markets and media.

On the writing side, we have experience in identity, naming, ads, web, PR, direct mail, collateral, white papers, magazine profiles and more. Truly, we’ve written or proofed just about everything.

Meet our team

Team Word Jones is made up of senior-level contractors with expertise honed over individual 10- to 20-year freelance careers. That also means every one of us brings distinctive business-owner-level drive, resourcefulness and professionalism to our work.

Our writer-editor crew has professional experience across the publishing, teaching, higher education, creative writing, linguistics and journalism spheres. We also have long-established relationships with expert contractors in graphic design, translation, web development, public relations, branding and other content-adjacent specialties.

Our core team includes:

Brynna King, Owner

Over a 15-year career in professional writing and editing, Brynna has worked with individuals, in-house marketing teams, creative agencies, public entities and more to develop content and copy for all kinds of assets and publications. She delivers writing that’s both artful and immaculate, easily shifting modes between creative development and exacting editing tasks.

Brynna holds a B.A. in English and an M.A.T. in English education. She started subcontracting with Word Jones in 2011 and bought the business in 2023.


Ellen Jackson, Editor

An English major with experience in commercial publishing, Ellen is a meticulous editor. She went to culinary school and worked as a pastry chef for 12 years before returning to her roots as a writer and editor. She’s a cookbook author, recipe developer, and food writer and stylist, and she brings a deep interest in regenerative food systems to her work with local and national food producers.


Sarah Craig, Designer

Sarah’s extensive skill set ranges from brand design and development to package design, logo creation and illustration. She has worked with agencies (including Portland’s iconic Sandstrom Partners) and top brands such as Columbia Sportswear, AllBirds, Nike, Adidas, Moonstruck Chocolate and Xerox. She’s passionate about crafting designs that not only captivate audiences, but also deliver lasting impact.


Kenny de la Torre, Translator

Kenny worked as a Spanish instructor, international trade manager, and judicial interpreter before forming iWorld Translations, our go-to translation resource. She has degrees in communications, international studies, and literary, technical and scientific translation. Her team provides document and audio-visual media translation, as well as live translation and interpretation.


Eric King, Operations Manager

Eric coordinates client accounts, builds partner relationships and develops marketing and business strategies. His work is informed by a 14-year career including several years of agency experience followed by in-house marketing and brand strategy management for OtterBox and KEEN. He has a degree in business marketing, and his background also includes photography, art, and sports reporting and analysis.


Jim Moore, Founder (retired)

Jim started Word Jones 25 years ago and today serves as the executive director of Bicycle Rides Northwest. Since his jones is incurable, he collaborates with the current WJ team when the stars (and cell towers) align.

jones n. (slang): an addiction; a strong or compulsive craving for a particular substance or experience. [Jim has a serious jones for his morning coffee.]

Why Word Jones?

To have a word jones is to be obsessed with language, and that was the original impetus for creating Word Jones: the drive, the need, to find the perfect words to convey the desired message in any situation. Oh, and getting the details — spelling, punctuation and grammar — right every time.

We couldn’t help it then, and we can’t help it now; it’s just who we are. And the thing about people who have a jones is, they can recognize others who are similarly afflicted.

And so over time we’ve built a network — you might even think of it as a professional support group — of people who have that need in their own specialties. The jones for perfection runs hot through everything we work on, and it’s made all of us quite good at what we do.
